About Music For Canberra

Music For Canberra - Excellence and Accessibility in Music

Two of Canberra’s longest-established Key Arts Organisations, Music For Everyone & Canberra Youth Music, merged in January 2015 to form Music For Canberra.

A long musical history…

Bringing together 30 and 50 years of ACT musical history respectively, the merged organisation offers Canberra’s largest program of instrumental, ensemble & orchestral tuition, musical experiences and workshops, and performance opportunities. As a non-profit organisation with a community focus, Music For Canberra encourages people of any age (starting as early as 18 months old in our ‘Music Play’ groups), any ability (including ‘Mixed Ability’ music & drumming groups for people living with a disability) and any background to take up an instrument or singing, and experience the benefits music can offer. Learning together…

With a focus on group learning – be that in classes for complete beginners, right through to the esteemed Canberra Youth Orchestra – Music For Canberra CEO Toni Maxfield points out the positive social and personal benefits to be gained from learning music. She says, “it’s always so heartening to hear feedback from our members about how learning an instrument has improved their quality of life, whether that’s through meeting new friends in a group class, personal satisfaction in picking up an instrument they haven’t played in years, or hearing from parents how playing as part of an orchestra has improved their child’s focus, social confidence & success in other areas of their schooling.” She adds, “We’re very excited by the increased learning & performance opportunities we’ll be able to offer the Canberra community by bringing together these two musical organisations.”

Programs to suit everyone…

Combining two already-comprehensive programs, Music For Canberra offers individual & group instrumental tuition, orchestral groups including the Canberra Youth Orchestra and James McCusker Orchestra, children’s choirs and adult singing groups including the Canberra Children’s Choir, string ensembles for youth & adults, a large program of music classes for people living with a disability, and rock band tuition programs for youth & adults, as well as running in-school music programs including the Drumbeat Cognitive Behavioural Therapy program.

Performance opportunities for all levels…

As well as being Canberra’s largest not-for-profit community music school with the broadest range of programs, another distinctive point of difference to being a student at Music For Canberra are the performance opportunities offered to our members. Throughout the year, participants are encouraged to perform at member concerts, and at other community events throughout the year including at the National Multicultural Festival, Floriade, the Canberra International Music Festival, concerts at Llewellyn Hall and other Arts Centres including the Tuggeranong & Belconnen Arts Centres, Garema Place in Civic, the National Eisteddfod, and many other local festivals & events in Canberra and the surrounding regions.

In addition, most of our programs & tuition take place in the historic and recently-renovated Ainslie Arts Centre, offering light-filled, open classrooms in a building custom-designed as a place of music learning & performance.
