Canberra Children's Choir

Canberra's longest-running choir for children

Thursdays 4:45 - 5:45pm with Greta

The Canberra Children’s Choir, for children aged 8-12yrs, aims to achieve a high choral standard, yet in a flexible and fun learning environment. Choral arrangements are based on a variety of sacred, secular, modern & ancient music in one, two & three part harmony.

The Choir performs at member concerts and also enters into local events and competitions such as the National Eisteddfod, and local music & arts festivals including Floriade. Keep up to date with upcoming concerts by regularly checking our Events page or Facebook page!

The Canberra Children’s Choir was established in 1967 by Judith Clingan AM, and will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary in 2017.

* On top of the term fee,  a $15 fee is charged annually to cover a year’s subscription to the online Sight Singing School, a learning supplement used by our conductor.

Audition for the Canberra Children’s Choir:

Our next round of auditions to join the Canberra Children’s Choir will take place on Friday 24th June, 2016, for our Term 3 mid-year intake. See our Choir Auditions page for more information on booking a short, easy 5-minute audition. Our conductor Greta auditions new choristers in a short, 5-minute audition whilst the choir warms up with our accompanist. From here, successful auditionees can slot straight into that day’s rehearsal and begin enjoying their new choir!

If you’d like to come along for a free trial first to see what we do, please get in touch with our office who can let you know the details of the next rehearsal.

Canberra Children’s Choir FAQs:

Q. Do I need to read music to join the Canberra Children’s Choir ?
A. No. Music reading is taught at the Canberra Children’s Choir and supported by personal home learning via Mark O’Leary’s online Sight Singing School (yearly membership to this is included in your choir fees). Mark O’Leary’s Sight Singing School consists of 399 carefully graded musical examples and supporting exercises. The first songs are very simple (just 2 notes) and there are plenty of practise examples at each level ensuring easy progress and thorough skill development.

Q. What will I be expected to do at my audition, how long will it take and who will be present there?
A. The Canberra Children’s Choir conductor Greta Claringbould will take your audition. Greta may ask you to sing from memory a very short musical phrase, that has been played to you several times on the piano – no sweat! Your audition will take no longer than five minutes.

Q. Can my Mum, Dad, grandparent or caregiver come into the audition with me?
A. Certainly; our auditions are family-friendly and your support person is most welcome to be present at the audition.

Q. When will I know the results of my audition?
A. Greta will tell you your audition results straight away. If you are successful, we will welcome you warmly to your first Canberra Children’s Choir rehearsal that very day.

Q. When & where does the choir rehearse?
A. All our choirs rehearse weekly on Thursdays throughout the school term: Training Choir 3:45 – 4:30pm, Children’s Choir 4:45 – 6:00pm and Youth Choir 6:00 – 7:00pm.

Rehearsals have had a change of venue in 2016, and now take place in the B-block Hall at the Gorman House Arts Centre, map below. Members of both Canberra Children’s Choir & Youth Choir are welcome to stay late / come early for a cross-over half-hour (5:30 – 6:00pm) in which we sing together as a larger group.

Q. Do boys sing in the Canberra Children’s Choir and Canberra Youth Choir?
A. Yes, yes, yes!! Our demographic is almost an even split between boys and girls and our repertoire is tailored for the singing pleasure and enjoyment of everyone.
