Hand Drumming Lessons: 5+ years
Group lessons for children 5+ years learning hand drumming & percussion
Hand drumming lessons provide a great first instrument for young children to begin learning, as the instrument itself is not difficult to master, enabling children to focus their attentions on perfecting increasingly complex rhythmic patterns. Hand drumming lessons provide students with a solid rhythmic grounding – an essential musical skill when going on to pursue other instruments over the course of their musical studies. Participants are exposed to a variety of hand drumming styles & techniques from across different cultures, using djembes, bongos, congas, and a broad range of other percussive instruments.
Children do not need any prior musical experience to enrol in hand drumming lessons. When they’re ready, students typically progress to drum kit group lessons, in consultation with the teacher. In the older groups, children continue to work on mastering their instrument, postural technique, and learning more advanced musical notation & rhythmic patterns.
Music For Canberra believes strongly in the importance of performance in improving the self-confidence and musical ability of students of all ages, and hand drumming students who would like to are certainly encouraged to participate in our member concert events (but are under no pressure if they don’t wish to).
What do I need to bring to hand drumming lessons?
Ahead of each term beginning, please ensure you are ready to start hand drumming lessons with:
- a plastic display folder to store the music you teacher will hand out in class
- a sharpened pencil (preferably with an eraser on top)
- you don’t need to bring a drum – we have those for you in class! (however you can talk to your teacher in class about purchasing practise pads or a small drum to continue home learning)
