ANU + CYO Collaboration Concert feat. Nicholas Hilderson

Canberra’s finest young musicians perform works by ANU School of Music Composers

The Canberra Youth Orchestra, conducted by Max McBride, and the ANU School of Music will present a unique collaboration concert on the 21st of September at Llewellyn Hall, 7:30pm. This concert will feature CYO Concerto Competition winner Nicholas Hilderson, as well as several compositions by staff and alumni of the ANU School of Music.

Despite being offered places at both the Sydney and Melbourne Conservatoriums to study clarinet, Nicholas Hilderson chose to study Economics and Mathematics at the Australian National University whist continuing to further his study of the clarinet under the tutelage of Eloise Fisher. He is currently the Principal Clarinettist of the Canberra Youth Orchestra and President of the ANU Music Society. Hilderson will be performing Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat Major by Carl Maria von Weber.

Conductor Max McBride is one of the most widely respected musicians active in Australia today, having found success on the concert stage and as an educator. He has had an active conducting career, having worked with most of the professional orchestra in Australian, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras. Max has been an ANU School of Music faculty member since 1994.

The Canberra Youth Orchestra will also be presenting a series of compositions written by several members of the ANU School of Music community, including Kim Cunio, Frank Millward, Chris Sainsbury, Alec Hunter and Chloe Sinclair. Each piece that they have composed is unique, demonstrating the incredible and varied musical talent of Canberran musicians. The ANU is fast becoming a go to place to study composition with nearly eighty tertiary students enrolled. This partnership will allow new music to flourish in Canberra.

Do not miss this exciting opportunity to support some of Canberra’s finest young musicians perform and collaborate with the talented composers of the ANU School of Music.
