James McCusker Orchestra plays at Goodwin Village

On Sunday 20th March, our James McCusker Orchestra travelled for a special incursion performance to the community of the Goodwin Residential Care Village. The talented young musicians in JMO represented Music For Canberra’s core mission beautifully, giving music back to the community – especially to those least able to participate in external musical experiences independently. All players conducted themselves professionally and gave a moving performance which was enthusiastically received by their audience.

Our CEO, Kathleen Grant, says: “What a fantastic response we saw to the efforts of the James McCusker Orchestra at the Goodwin Village in Monash this weekend. Conductor Shilong Ye, ably backed by our volunteer manager Dot O’Connor, set the Orchestra up in the main area of the David Harper House and performed to a very appreciative audience of residents.

The overture of the Mikado sparked many happy stories from some Village residents of when they performed the musical at school, which is a wonderful reminder of how music can span and unite the generations. Although many in the audience have not seen Pirates of the Caribbean, this arrangement certainly got many toes tapping and outed some residents with pirating tendencies for sure. The audience enjoyed this piece so much it received an encore performance. And why was the orchestra that good? Well they just “Ah-argh” …oh took me ages to work that one in!

Congratulations to JMO, Shilong and Dot for their first public concert, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the next refinement in their performances. They certainly made a positive difference to their audience who were full of praise and that is priceless.”

(Kathleen apologises for only having an iPhone picture of the day as the office camera was busy over at the CAP Expo – we welcome parents to share images they may have taken on our Facebook page!).
