What do I need to bring to Canberra Children’s Choir rehearsals?
Just yourself – and your enthusiasm to learn! – as well as a plastic display folder for storing the sheet music which your conductor will hand out at the beginning of each term.
The Canberra Children’s Choir, for those aged between 8 and 16 years, aims to achieve a high choral standard, in a flexible and fun learning environment. Choral arrangements are based on a variety of music in one, two & three part harmony. The Choir provides the opportunity for focused work on personal and group vocal development, including singing, score reading, blend and balance, rhythmic accuracy and vocal technique.
The Choir will perform at member concerts and also enters into local events and competitions such as the National Eisteddfod. Keep up to date with upcoming concerts by regularly checking our Events page or Facebook page.
Choir Director: Tobias Cole
Tobias Cole is an award winning singer and conductor with a passion for quality ensemble performance and for creating pathways for children and adults to achieve this. He is a regular guest singer in one of Australia’s finest vocal groups, The Song Company and in 2014 established his own professional ensemble in Canberra, Clarion, to perform Evensong a monthly program in the National Portrait Gallery.
In 2013 he founded Turner Trebles primary school choir and, in 2014, Vocal Fry for high school students in the ANU Music Development Program. While he was artistic director of Canberra Choral Society (2011-2016) he invited Vocal Fry and Turner Trebles to perform in a number of programs, giving them the opportunity of working with an experienced chorus and professional orchestra and soloists. In 2016, with ArtsACT and Australia Council funding he established an opera company Handel in the Theatre to produce The Vow, his adaptation of Handel’s Jephtha.
In 2018, Tobias produced Handel’s Esther, again with ArtsACT funding. As a singer he has performed principal roles with all the major Australian opera companies, including Opera Australia and has performed as a soloist throughout Australia and overseas.
