Recorder Lessons: 5+ years
Group lessons for children 5+ years learning recorder
Monday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons with Barbara
Recorder is a great first instrument for young children to begin learning, as the instrument itself is not difficult to master, enabling children to focus their attentions on learning and developing their skills in sight-reading musical notation, and mastering rhythm, pitch and intonation in their recorder lessons.
Typically in term 1 and term 3 each year we accept brand new students into our Beginner Recorder group lessons; from here, students typically progress to increasing stages of Recorder Group, in consultation with the teacher. In the older groups, children continue to work on mastering their instrument, postural technique, learning more advanced musical notation & sight reading, and playing as part of a ensemble.
What do I need to bring to my recorder lessons?
Students enrolling for the first time in our Recorder lessons will need to contact Better Music or another music store to purchase:
– the 105a Aulos Soprano recorder
– the book “Recorder From the Beginning, Book 1” by John Pitts
– please also bring a plastic display folder for other sheet music your teacher hands out in class
After completing our Recorder Group lessons pathway, children may wish to progress on to our more advanced youth recorder ensemble, Schnabelflotes, or look towards trying another instrument either privately or in a group. See our full program to view all the classes your child (and yourself!) might like to get involved with.
Music For Canberra believes strongly in the importance of performance in improving the self-confidence and musical ability of students of all ages, and recorder students who would like to are certainly encouraged to participate in our member concert events (but are under no pressure to if they don’t wish to).
